Noise Vibration & Harshness: Fundamentals and Quality Testing

Armed with a better understanding of Noise Vibration and Harshness (NVH) and the ability to remove quality inspection subjectivity, manufacturers are meeting today’s heightened quality expectations. Signalysis training sessions, tailored to your specific applications, can be hosted at our facility, or held on-site. Soon we’ll be offering an option for remote virtual training.

Schafer Driveline

As a manufacturer of custom engineered gear and driveline solutions Schafer Driveline backs each custom-engineered driveline with a built-in reliability and hassle-free performance customers have come to trust. And quality-focused companies like Schafer, never sit still when it comes to the integrity of their products.

Whether it’s a heavy-duty electric axle to a light-duty gas vehicle axle, gearboxes or brake assemblies, Schafer solutions are engineered for each customer’s specific application.  And zero-defect is the baseline standard as it works to exceed the expectations of each customer.

In spring of 2021, Signalysis and NV Solutions Automation partnered with Schafer Driveline (Fredericktown, OH) to advance the manufacturer’s product quality goals and initiatives. Held on-site, the single-day program provided an overview of the effects of Noise Vibration & Harshness (NVH) on quality and discussed how defects are best captured before reaching the customer.

One-Day Training

With an emphasis on gear-box quality inspection, this session was designed to further advance quality through a higher understanding of gear and geared system design and quality inspection. The first part of the day, presented by NV Solutions Automation principal engineer and owner, Jerry Nieb, focused on gears and gearing systems.

Mr. Neib is a registered Professional Engineer with 40 years of experience in the metals, automotive, manufacturing, defense, medical and aerospace industries. Throughout his career, he has designed, developed, and installed numerous data acquisition and process monitoring systems. The course was largely based on Mr. Neib’s test and troubleshooting experience, knowledge of gears and geared machine design, and twelve-years of teaching such topics as a Cincinnati State Adjunct Professor.

Presented by Signalysis, part two of instruction was focused on analysis of vibration data acquired on systems that use gears. This included hands-on experience with Signalysis SigQC software on such applications as the golf cart and other utility vehicle gearboxes produced by Schafer.  SigQC powers Signalysis quality inspection test systems determining, in real-time, if quality goals are met. The system can be integrated into existing manufacturing lines providing a completely automated PASS-FAIL inspection solution. Flexible and scalable, SIGQC adapts to meet current and future production and laboratory applications.
