What is an Accelerometer? An accelerometer is a device that measures the vibration, or acceleration of motion of a structure.

What is Amplitude? Amplitude is the maximum extent of a vibration or oscillation, measured from the position of equilibrium.

What is Critical Damping? Critical damping is the minimum value of damping that prevents oscillation is a desirable solution to many vibration problems. Increased damping implies more energy dissipation, and more phase lag in the response of a system. Reduced damping means more oscillation, which is often undesirable.

What are Degrees of Freedom? The degrees of freedom refer to the number of ways a molecule in the gas phase may move, rotate, or vibrate in space.

What is the Dinger? The dinger is an NDT system used for inspection of raw or machined metal cast, fabricated, sintered, forged, die cast, or ceramic parts.

What is Eddy-Current Testing? Eddy-Current Testing (ECT) is an electromagnetic Non-Destructive Testing method that uses electromagnetic induction to detect and characterize surface and sub-surface flaws in conductive materials.

What is Frequency Response? Frequency Response is the dependence on signal frequency of the output–input ratio of an amplifier or other device.

What is an IQC Test System? IQC Test Systems are quality inspection test systems developed by Signalysis.

What is LabView? LabView is systems engineering software for applications that require test, measurement, and control with rapid access to hardware and data insights.

What is Liquid Penetrant Inspection? Also known as Penetrant Inspection (PI) or Dye Penetrant Inspection (DP), Liquid Penetrant Inspection is a widely applied and low-cost inspection method used to check surface-breaking defects in all non-porous materials (metals, plastics, or ceramics).

What is Magnetic-Particle Inspection? Magnetic-Particle Inspection is a Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) process for detecting surface and shallow subsurface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials such as iron, nickel, cobalt, and some of their alloys.

What is Metal Fatigue Testing? Metal Fatigue Testing is used to identify a weakening of metal due to stress, resulting in an accumulation of small cracks.

What is Nondestructive Inspection? Nondestructive Inspection (NDI) is synonymous with Nondestructive Testing (NDT) and Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE).

What is Non-Destructive Testing? Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) includes any of a wide group of analysis techniques used to evaluate the properties of a material, component, or system without causing damage.

What is Objectionable Noise? Objectionable noise is any sound that is undesired or interferes with one’s hearing.

What is Objective Quality Inspection? Objective quality inspection is an unbiased quality interpretation that is rooted in science rather than subjective interpretation.

What is Oscillation? Oscillation is a variation or fluctuation between two extremes of opinion, action, or quality.

What is Design Validation Testing? Design validation testing is the process of employing testing methods to examine the integrity of a new design or change to an existing design.

What is a Q-Factor? In physics and engineering, the quality factor or Q factor is a dimensionless parameter that describes how underdamped an oscillator or resonator is.

What is Quality Inspection? Product quality inspection is the process of examining parts/products to ensure that they meet specific quality standards and/or meet the specifications of a customer.

What is Radiographic Testing? Radiographic testing is a form of Non-Destructive Testing that uses ionizing radiation to inspect materials and components with the objective of locating and quantifying defects and degradation in material properties that would lead to the failure of engineering structures.

What is Resonant Frequency? Resonant Frequency is the oscillation of a system at its natural or unforced resonance. Resonance occurs when a system is able to store and easily transfer energy between different storage modes, such as Kinetic energy or Potential energy as you would find with a simple pendulum.

What is a Shock Response Spectrum? A Shock Response Spectrum is a graphical representation of a shock, or any other transient acceleration input, in terms of how a Single Degree of Freedom system would respond to that input.

What is SigQC Software? SigQC is Signalysis’ proprietary software used to drive IQC quality inspection test systems.

What is Structural Dynamics? Structural dynamics is a type of structural analysis which covers the behavior of a structure subjected to dynamic loading. Dynamic loads include people, wind, waves, traffic, earthquakes, and blasts. Any structure can be subjected to dynamic loading.

What is Subjective Quality Inspection? Subjective Quality Inspection refers to the unscientific process of inspecting a product for quality that is largely reliant on one’s interpretation of quality.

What is Ultrasonic Testing? Ultrasonic testing is a form of Non-Destructive Testing based on the propagation of ultrasonic waves in the object or material tested.

What is Vibration? Vibration is a mechanical phenomenon whereby oscillations occur about an equilibrium point.

What is a Vibration Signature? A vibration signature is the characteristic pattern of vibration it generates while it is in operation.

What is a Vibrometer? A vibrometer is a device that measures a vibration’s amplitude.
